Shona Reflections 2026 by Mark Green

A Striver’s story: Mark Green joined a Strive retreat on Eilean Shona, trading the usual high-octane challenges for mindful silence, digital detox, and deep breathwork.

I have recently returned from a retreat with Strive on the secluded Eilean Shona, centred around mindfulness.

I know that some of the less open-minded followers might assume I’m about to run naked through a forest and hug a tree, or maybe join a commune and smoke a peace pipe, but for those who are more open-minded - IYKYK.

Traditionally, Strive Challenges have focused on pushing physical limits and demonstrating that the mind can surpass the body; this time, however, we aimed to prove the same theory by directly addressing the mind instead of the body.

Yes, there was a physical aspect, but it involved daily, unique and surprisingly calming 'silent hikes' across the island's rugged peaks and challenging terrain. Picture a group of 20 highly accomplished leaders walking 20km… in silence!!; pausing for reflection at viewpoints that showcased the breathtaking surroundings.

The benefits of the reset were further enforced when we did our utmost to 'digitally detox', we enjoyed twice-daily saunas and icy sea plunges in the frigid waters of western Scotland, adhered to a no-alcohol policy, and savoured the incredible healthy meals prepared by the Shona team.

HOWEVER, the highlight was the breathwork and meditation led by the remarkable Rob Rea, who transported us into trance-like states, unlocking labyrinths of hidden rooms within our minds, through what were previously unknown closed doors, allowing us to really cleanse our thoughts, it was wonderfully surreal. True that it was a cathartic experience for all, and indeed emotional for some; this, while being expertly guided by his soothing Northern Irish accent.

Personally, as someone who generally sleeps less than a caffeinated squirrel and who Noah Devereux has jokingly congratulated for having a worse HRV (heart rate variability) than him…

I have taken what was learned into my lifestyle, adopted the 'two bells' sleep method and have actively embraced a more holistic approach since my return two weeks ago. The reset was indeed genuine, it's so important to take a moment to pause now and again. I am again further inspired to progress myself, the business, our team.

Thank you, Strive!
